Architectural Lighting’s 25th Anniversary

Right before Christmas, I went to New York for Architectural Lighting‘s 25th anniversary event, called “The Future of Lighting.” The event was organized around Pecha Kucha—style presentations and 14 installations by lighting company sponsors. I wrote about five of the installations, including my favorite, Rab Lighting‘s hanging ice cubes.

The company hung up two giant “light cubes”, each with a frozen luminaire inside. One was for a regular metal halide, the other for a LED fixture. The idea was to show how much energy metal halides waste on heat and don’t use on light, and conversely, to show how energy efficient LEDs are.

Everyone enjoyed touching the melting cubes and watching them drip, including me. How creative!

GRAY issue two, live

Mary’s Georgetown Haven

I posted my last tour on Apartment Therapy a couple of days ago, as part of my New Year’s resolution to quit blogging and focus more on long-form writing, including my work for GRAY. So for my last house tour, I present Mary’s Georgetown haven.

This project came from a client of Emily of M House Designs, whose work I admire. She has a gift for finding feminine fabrics that are perfect for the Mid-Atlantic region, but that aren’t stuffy or frou-frou. I think she’s talented with color and with draperies as well. Not everyone on Apartment Therapy appreciate traditional styles, but I sure do! And the Mid-Atlantic does, too. Thanks, Emily, for sharing this home.

Out of Print Coasters

You can file this under “I love it but who will I write about it for?” These classic book covers on coasters are simple vintage cool for bookaholics. How appropriate that they are made in Brooklyn, from Out of Print. The company also has tote bags, fleeces, and more with literature graphics.

Thanks to Joyfully Thriving for the mention about my post on 2012 resolutions for the home.

I found some good stuff on her site, too, including this post on canning blackberries. This is a good how-to for those who are interested in visual instructions for canning. Canning has become a summer tradition for me and my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. We’ve done raspberries and peaches, but maybe this summer we’ll try blackberries.

About two months ago, I got to do a really cool interview with the global marketing director for Artek, the furniture-manufacturing company that produces the designs of midcentury modern architect Alvar Aalto. Artek recently bought all the designs by Aalto’s contemporary, Ilmari Tapiovaara, including the Mademoiselle rocking chair to the left.

2012 Home Resolutions

Have you ever thought about making resolutions for your home? We make them for our bodies and our lifestyles each year, but I think our homes could benefit from this practice as well. On Decorating Your Way, I suggest a few ideas to get you started. Our resolution this year is to start saving up for a house to have resolutions for!

In other news, I think this is going to be my last post for Decorating Your Way. My professional resolutions for 2012 include spending more time on longer pieces, and I think that necessitates cutting back in other ways. I’m proud to present the first issue of GRAY magazine, focused on Pacific Northwest design, from British Columbia to Seattle to Portland. As editor at large for the first issue, I was lucky enough to write about some of my favorite PNW subjects: architect George Suyama, book-seller Peter Miller, Jean Jongeward and the color gray, and the Eames Lounger.

At long last, the preview issue of GRAY magazine is live. This is the efforts of editors and art directors who survived the folding of Seattle Homes & Lifestyles magazine, and decided to start anew.

As the magazine’s editor at large—a privilege the team allowed me, even though I haven’t been on SH&L staff for a few years—I was tickled to write, edit, and copyedit for this first issue. Many of my stories were saved for the first print issue, to be out so soon!
